The Green Card process is not “one size fit all” and there are options available to you due to the fact that not everyone who comes to the United States comes for the same reason. Below you will find different provisions that may allow you to come to the United States. You may be eligible and can begin the process of obtaining a Green Card if any of the following apply.

How to apply for a green card
Most people that are eligible to apply for a green card will need someone to assist them to file an immigrant petition often known as “sponsorship” although in some cases you can file this petition yourself. Here you have the most common forms you will be asked to file:
- Form I-130, Petition for Alien Relative
- Form I-140, Immigrant Petition for Alien Worker
- Form I-730, Refugee/Asylee Relative Petition
- Form I-589, Application for Asylum and for Withholding of Removal
Some petitions may include:
- Form I-360, Petition for Amerasian, Widow(er), or Special Immigrant
- Form I-526, Immigrant Petition by Alien Entrepreneur
- Form I-918, Petition of U Nonimmigrant Status
- Form I-929, Petition for Qualifying Family Member of a U-1 Nonimmigrant
After filling the documents required for your particular needs you be given a scheduled appointment at the application support center. The following information collected during this visit includes, but is not limited to:
- All supporting documentation
- A photo
- A background check
- Acknowledgement certificate signature notifying that you reviewed all the information and it is complete
- Interview (if applicable)
Once your appointment is done you will be able to check the status of your case at check your case status online and when the USCIS makes a decision they will send you a written decision notice.
Change of status
If you are in the United States and would like to apply for a Green Card, you can do so by following the adjustment of status process that allows you to apply for lawful permanent resident status without having to return to your home country. The eligibility for an adjustment of status may vary depending on the category you fall in when applying, and most of the time will require that someone else files a petition on your behalf.
